In this episode, Mark talks about granules; what they are, why they’re important, and what happens to your roof when you start losing them.

Shayla: You are listening today to the Roof Life of Oregon podcast and I’m talking today with Mark who is a roof consultant at Roof Life. Mark, I want to talk about granule loss. Why is it a big deal if we’re losing a lot of granules off our roof?

Mark: Good question. Granules are colored, ceramic pieces that are attached to your mat, the mat that makes up your shingles. Your shingles are made out of fiberglass, tar or asphalt and with these wonderful, colored ceramic pieces that are impregnated into the tar. That’s what gives the color. The granules protect the mat from the UV rays and from the storms and rains that really pelt down on to the shingle.

So why are we concerned about granule loss? Granule loss will take away the life of your roof. Whenever I bring my ladder up to the gutter’s edge and look down inside the gutter and I see a lot of granules, my mind just races. What’s going on? Is there a ventilation issue? Is there a manufactures defect? Is there an over-cleaning? Maybe the homeowner is just cleaning this and managing the moss by cleaning. A lot of these things come into my mind about granule loss. So if you have any questions, give us a call. We’ll come out and take a look at your shingles, take a look at why maybe you’re losing granules, and what is excessive granule loss, verses normal granule loss. We can help you.

Shayla: If you have any questions, like Mark said, please reach out to Roof Life of Oregon.
