Shayla: Welcome to the Roof Life of Oregon podcast. I’m talking today with Jerry who is a roof specialist at Roof Life. And, Jerry, if I see a water stain on my ceiling, is that a sign that I need to get up on the roof and look right on the spot to find the leak?
Jerry: No there’s a sign that you have a leak, but it’s not a sign of where exactly that leak is. I know there’s a lot of DIY applications out there to help fix the leak, and we do encourage people to not get up on top of the roof themselves. It is not as safe as people may think it is
Just because you walk into a room, you look up and you see this little stain in the ceiling, that does not necessarily mean the leak is right above it. A lot of times, the leak is quite a ways away from it. It’s just a matter of where it finally found its way in. Water’s a funny thing. It will go uphill, downhill and sideways. It will completely baffle a roofer’s mind and cannot understand why it’s leaking where it’s leaking. That’s why you really need to have a professional get up there and take a lot at it. We’re not going to take it away for people to try and remedy it before somebody gets out there to take care of it permanently, but be really careful before you go up there. Make sure you know the proper procedures on how to get on and off of a roof. But just because where you see the leak inside your house, doesn’t necessarily mean that’s where it’s going to be on your roof. Have a professional come out and take a look at it.
Shayla: And, Jerry, when I see a stain on my ceiling beginning, do I need to get on the phone with you guys right away? I mean, is this time is of the essence, kind of thing?
Jerry: Yeah. It could be. Leaks start off small and you never know how big they’re going to be. You really don’t. And we don’t know how much damage that’s already occurred. Just because you’re starting to see it inside your house, does not mean it’s a new leak. It could be a leak that’s been going on for years and it’s just starting to finally bleed its way into the house and so there already could be serious damage done on the inside. So if you see any kind of signs of a leak, give us a call.
Shayla: If you guys have any questions about what to do when you see that water stain on the ceiling, please reach out to Jerry and the team at Roof Life of Oregon. Thanks, Jerry.
