No Shingle Is Moss-Free

In the Pacific Northwest, we can’t hide from moss. It would grow on us, if we stood still long enough. Unfortunately, there is no such thing a moss free shingle.

There is such a thing as an AR shingle, which stands for “algae resistant”. I think some homeowners confuse it for “moss free,” which it definitely isn’t.  I’m not sure if contractors don’t know or if they’re lying to the homeowners, by AR shingles will not prevent moss growth.

In fact, there are two to three versions of algae that can even grow on AR shingles. And guess where they grow? Right here in the Pacific Northwest. AR shingles doesn’t stop the green slime coming out of your gutters, and it certainly doesn’t stop the moss.

When the moss starts (and it’s going to start), it may take a few years, because the manufacturing process of building a shingle leaves residue that stops anything from growing. When all of that washes away and you add dirt, you have a breeding ground for moss.

If you want to keep moss off your roof, you have to go with maintenance. Call Roof Life of Oregon. We’ll come out, see what the moss situation is, prescribe the right method to take care of it, and then treat the roof every three years to keep the moss off.
