Roof Life of Oregon is busy this time of year, so we try to be fair to our clients by serving them on a first come, first serve basis. Unfortunately, we had a client who chose not to wait, and ended up purchasing an entire roof that she didn’t need.

I was called out to her house, inspected the roof, and found that she had a pretty common issue. There was a dead valley* on her roof that was installed improperly, but would not call for the complete replacement of roof and materials. It was going to be about $1,600 to fix it.

The client ended up getting a little impatient while she was waiting for us to come out and fix the dead valley. She called another roofing company to take a look. This company pointed out a bunch of things on her roof that weren’t going to be problems for a long time.

They told her that her roof was completely shot and it needed to be replaced right away. She ended up purchasing a $20,000 roof. The sad thing is, this roof was only ten years old. There was nothing wrong with it!

It’s really frustrating to see this happen to people here in Portland. You can’t trust every opinion you get on your roof. I know you want your leak fixed as soon as possible, and we’ll do everything we can to get it done in a timely manner. But make sure you get a second opinion before replacing a perfectly good roof.

*A “valley” in roofing terms is anywhere the roof meets in a seam; different angles/slopes of the roof coming together. They often collect debris and water, which then stagnate and cause leaks.
