Shayla: You are listening to the Roof Life of Oregon podcast and I’m talking with Jerry today. Jerry, you mentioned that you had an experience with a customer recently where they were really impressed with the way the crew handled their home. Tell us a little bit about that.

Jerry: Yeah, I went to a house last week. They called us up and wanted us to come and take a look at their roof and we don’t always know the reasons why they call in, but this particular reason, they saw their neighbor getting roofed. And when I got to the house, she wanted to tell me about the experience that she had watching our company put this roof on her neighbor’s house. And she was just floored with how clean and how polite and just how nice everybody was and it was quite. We take a lot of care and pride in that and it felt really good to see that, because it’s one of the things that we do talk about at Roof Life. You can have an awesome company, you can have the best products in the world, but it doesn’t do any good unless you have a really core set of guys that know what they’re doing and actually care about what they’re doing.

So it was just really cool when the client sat down and she goes, I watched this crew for seven days, and if it wasn’t for the nail guns and the compressor running to put the roof on, she would’ve never known that they were there. Her house was actually backed right up to his house. And she never saw debris, she never saw dirt, she never saw a mess. She never heard loud music. She was talking about how people have had construction done in her neighborhood and new roofs, because it’s one of those neighborhoods that all the roofs are failing and it’s time to get them replaced and she goes, “It is insane how noisy, the foul language, the loud music, and just how dirty everything is,” and she goes, “with your guys, I have never experienced anything so pleasurable, when it comes to a construction crew, because they were just awesome.” There was one guy on the crew, his name was Jessie, that she would go up to and talk to, and she goes, “It was just super enjoyable.” And so we got a client out of it.

She hired Roof Life and it wasn’t anything to do with the price, it wasn’t anything to do with other than the fact she saw how professional, and how much we actually cared about the house, not just the roof, but the landscaping, the siding, the windows, the doors, the gutters. They had Leaf Guard gutters, he had really nice landscaping everything. Everything was taken care of. So it was treated as if it was their house. So she just loved it.

Shayla: Kind of looking at the opposite side of things, tell us a couple stories about things you’ve seen that are the opposite of what Roof Life does.

Jerry: The opposite, one of the biggest opposites is a lot of roofers just drop the stuff to the ground. They do not really put a lot of thought or care into where that roof debris is landing. Because let’s face it, it is not pretty by all means, when all that roofing comes down and hits the ground. And it’s funny, because we sit down with every client and we got through exactly what we’re going to do and there’s a little excerpt that says, “We will not curse, drink or play loud music while working on your property.” Every single client laughs at that because they have heard so much foul language, and hear so many loud songs. We drive by roofers all the time and you hear them cussing, and you hear them playing loud music. We just don’t want to be wrapped up into that ball, really. It’s just about taking care of our customers.

Shayla: What about at the end of the day, because the roofing project, these could take several days, several weeks. What’s the timeline and what do you do at the end of the day to make sure it looks good for the homeowner?

Jerry: So timeline, my goal and our goal that we have for Roof Life and this is what we tell every single client, is that we want you to be able to wake up in the morning and not feel like you’re in a construction war zone and be able to come home at night at ease and not with a lot of anxiety because you have a mess. So our guys clean all day long. That’s all they do. We have one guy dedicated to just cleaning the grounds non-stop; making sure the nails are picked up. And every single night all the tarps are cleaned up, everything is taken care of to where when you come home, it’s like the client said, you would’ve never known we were there, if it wouldn’t have been for the new roof that was on the house.

And it doesn’t really matter how many guys that you have on the roof. It matters on what guys you have on the roof and taking care of it. That’s why we love our guys so much. We take care of them, because we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our installers, our crews. The are really what make Roof Life. Yeah, we have great product, we take care of you, we have great warranties, but it will not do any good to have all that fancy stuff, if you don’t have somebody who really knows what they’re doing or cares about what they’re doing.
