Shayla: Welcome to the Roof Life of Oregon Podcast. I’m talking today with Mark who is a roof specialist at Roof Life. And, Mark, I want to talk about dirt today. What can you tell me about dirt on my roof?

Mark: I’d like to talk about a topic we all know something about. All of us eat it, play in it, and some of us breathe it. Some of our most fun things with it and some sports are even named after it and some institutions shutter at the thought of it. We have clean rooms and filters, mud bogging and snorkels and lifters, vacuums, dust pans, and swifters, dirt bikes, dune bikes, and buggies, mud tires, paddle tires, and bogies, gardening, mud pies and pansies, dusters, dust bunnies, and dust bowls. Yes, I’m talking about dirt.

Our atmosphere is filled with dirt. It gets into everything, all the nooks and crannies. When accumulated, dirt rests on your roof, just add water and watch the magic appear. Moss. Moss loves dirt. Historically, Roof Life has been just a company that we take care of moss. It’s always the after effect of what we see and then we take it off and then we apply the treatment to keep the moss from coming back. And somehow, someway, it comes back under the trees, around the bushes. And I’m the one that does all the renewals and I’m going, “Why is there moss coming back?” Well, we got with our manufacturer of the chemical company and we learned that if we were to rinse off the dirt first, then the moss doesn’t appear. Hence, we are preventative maintenance. No more moss.

Normally, a little bit of moss doesn’t equate to a phone call into our office. Usually it’s the profile of your home, your beautiful home and then all of a sudden you look up and you see this ugly moss that’s on your phone, the uglies and nasties, if you will. And that’s what promotes a call. But what we do, we come out and we look at the moss, we look at the fungus, the black fungus in the case of cedar shake, but we also look at many other things. We look at flashing, and pipe flashings, and chimney flashings, and skylights, and all the penetrations into your home. And we look around at all of these components, as well as the moss and the fungus among us. Indeed, give us a call. We’ll help you.

Shayla: Alright, if you have any questions about anything, you’ll want to reach out to Roof Life of Oregon. Thanks, Mark.
