Here at Roof Life of Oregon, we are always looking for ways to make your roof last longer and be more effective. Using drip metal in your gutters seems so simple, but without it, you might be creating a project that will cost you thousands more than it should.

There is no code or rule that requires builders to use drip metal when installing gutters. In fact, none of them use it- not even high-end ones. But we at Roof Life of Oregon believe it to be essential to your roof installation.

Basically, your roof comes down and meets your gutter. Drip metal is a metal that’s underneath the shingles and goes down inside the gutter. It keeps the shingles performing the way they are supposed to. Without it, the shingles will start to bend down inside the gutter. It’s extremely unattractive.

Drip metal also protects the wood behind the gutters. If your gutters ever back up and the water works up inside, the wind could lift them up and then water gets to the wood. That’s when it starts to rot. If you ever decide to put a new roof on or change the gutters, all that wood has to come out and be replaced. You’ve added thousands of dollars to a project that didn’t need to happen. Drip metal could’ve prevented it.

When we put a roof on, we always put brand new metal in there. The manufacturers and building codes don’t require it, but the manufacturers do recommend it, because it’s going to help their shingles last longer. It may seem like a simple fix, but it’s really a big deal for the longevity of your shingles and could save you thousands in the long run.
