We’ve never kept it a secret. We’ve just been hearing a lot of talk about some other products that people have been using on roofs in Portland and thought we’d let you know a little more about how we are able to guarantee that your roof won’t be growing a carpet of moss anytime soon after we’ve treated it.
Dennis Covert is a guy we like. A lot. He started out in the Roof Maintenance business right here in Oregon. He wasn’t happy with all of the other moss treatments on the market (most of them are a mixture of snake oil, old wive’s tales and hope). Dennis figured out that if you change the pH on the roof, you’ll create an environment that moss simply can’t live in. He also formulated a treatment that will safely and harmlessly absorb into the roofing material to keep moss from growing back anytime soon. He’s a smart guy.
He started manufacturing these treatments under the name Dennco Chemical (get it?). Dennco’s got different formulas for cedar, composition (asphalt) and tile. Because cedar is the most absorbent, our treatments will keep moss off a cedar roof for 5 years. Guaranteed. Composition and tile are less porous than natural wood, so the best we can do is 3 years of mosslessness.
That’s still miles ahead of any other product on the market. Period.
Exclusively from Roof Life of Oregon
Roof Life has the exclusive license for the Portland area to apply these Dennco Chemical Products. The great news is that they are non-toxic, environmentally-friendly and highly effective.
These treatments are backed and warranted by both Dennco Chemical and Roof Life of Oregon. All of our jobs are audited by Dennco Chemical to ensure that each and every roof we treat receives the same desired results. Mixed right and applied right – different than all others. No one else has a certification process.
Oh, and when we say 5-years, we mean it. We won’t expect our customers to pay some kind of partial treatment in year 4 or 5 like other companies. Why? Because we have an ace up our sleeve, with the name Dennco on it. Our treatments are the only non-homeowner subsidized three and five year roof treatment products in the Greater Portland area.
Other Moss Removal Options
There are several other moss control products out on the market, but we choose not to use them for several reasons. They’re not environmentally friendly, they corrode your roofing components, and lastly are not backed or warrantied by the application manufacturer. The following are some of the potential products you may find to help control moss:
Zinc Sulfate – This product is corrosive to everything holding your roof together including your gutters…. Though this product is supposedly safe for surrounding plants, it is toxic to fishes and aquatic invertebrates. Do not apply this product to water or let the product come into contact with water sources.
Laundry Detergent – Seriously? You see it being sprinkled on rooftops all over town. It’s ugly, messy and harmful to everything downstream. Don’t do it. Degreasers in the product cause loss of granules.
Zinc Strips – They’re ugly and only marginally effective (around the margins of the zinc). They can be dangerous to install (mostly by DIYers) and you can do serious damage to your roof if you don’t know what you’re doing up there and you’ll find nail holes everywhere.
